Behind the making of "Who Dat?"

"Who Dat?" is a new song I produced with my friend and mentor, Beatsmith, featuring Jaae Kash and Chille'Baby from the Gospel Gangstaz. This record is so special to me in many ways, and I thought, what a better way to continue my blog series 'THOUGHTS' than to start with a deep dive into this song.

The Beat

So this beat came about during one of the hardest days for me, mentally speaking. I had been dealing with some struggles in my music career, some doubts, and I was fighting the feeling of quitting. I was in the studio, breaking down, and I decided to talk to Beatsmith.
Beatsmith and I go back ..we have been friends since high school, and he has been one of the few people with whom I have been able to share my inner thoughts. Beatsmith answered, and after a few minutes, he was at the studio door. We talked for a few hours, and after venting, he told me, "Let's make a beat."
I had shared with him previous conversations I had with Jaae Kash about making a record that had an old school west coast feel. Beatsmith got on the drums, I got on IG Live, and we began creating. As he played around with bass lines, there was one melody he did that caught my eye (or ear), and that became the centerpiece of the record. After some guitars, the beat had come to life. I am so glad I went on IG Live because we were able to capture the magic, and now you can watch it HERE.

THE LYRICS AND FEATURES

One day, I was working on mixing the beat when Jaae Kash stopped by the studio. I told him that I had a West Coast style beat that I thought he might like, and I showed it to him. He was blown away. He told me he absolutely loved it and that he had someone in mind. I sent him the beat, and after a couple of weeks, he told me he had a hook for it. Jaae Kash wanted to talk about Jesus' return on this record.
I found it so profound because of where I was when I created this beat and how my conversation with Beatsmith that night was about persevering and enduring. How fitting that this song would talk about Jesus' return because that means we have to persevere to see His return.
Now, Jaae Kash had told me he wanted to get Chille'Baby on this song. I was so excited because I grew up listening to Gospel Gangstaz. Growing up in a Christian home, I wasn't allowed to listen to non-Christian music. I found a Gospel Gangstaz record, and I fell in love with Christian hip hop. To have Chile'Baby on this record was such an achievement for me due to the fact that he was an artist that I listened to growing up.

The Support

I am in awe of the amount of support we have received for this record. From having it rated a 10 out of 10 by Rapzilla's "Critique Fridays" to gaining almost 10k streams (as of 7/23/23) overall on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. Thank you to everyone who has played the song, shared it, added it to a playlist, and enjoyed it. There is so much more to come, and we look forward to continuing to see what Uneak Music produces next.
